[EN] The Main Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, or simply Pulkovo Observatory, is one of the first and most famous scientific institutions in Russia. You can read more about the observatory, for example, here. But, besides its importance for astronomy, there`s another side of the observatory: it has a wonderful park. Since Imperial times until nowadays surroundings of the Pulkovo hill are protected by law in order to maintain the best conditions for astronomical needs. Multi-floor buildings, plants or industrial activities are banned here. Plus, taking into consideration that the observatory is located on a hill 40 to 50 meters higher than most of the city territory, far from residential or industrial areas, you should not be amazed seeing squirrel or hedgehog walking by the buildings filled with scientists, seismoscopes and telescopes :-).

Главная астрономическая обсерватория Российской Академии наук, или просто Пулковская обсерватория - одно из старейших и самых прославленных учреждений российской науки. Прочитать подробнее о ней можно, к примеру, тут. Однако, кроме научной значимости, обсерватория известна своим парком. С царских времен и до (увы) недавней поры в трехкилометровой зоне вокруг обсерватории запрещалось крупное строительство, промышленная активность, и все прочее, что могло помешать наблюдениям. Вкупе с расположением обсерватории вдали от жилых и промышленных районов, а также с тем, что Пулковская гора возвышается на 40-50 метров над средним уровнем города, это привело к уникальной экологической ситуации: ежи и белки - частые гости научного городка, вольготно шныряющие среди домов и зданий телескопов.
