As they were heading into the 1980s, the Rolling Stones had very little left to prove. But 1981's 'Tattoo You,' a truly great album, features some of the band's best songs. Many were pulled together from mid-'70s sessions, when Mick Jagger wore his rock-star crown with one eye on the competition. He sings 'Start Me Up,' the album's best known song, with authority.
In the US, "Start Me Up" spent three weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October and November 1981, kept from the summit by "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" by Christopher Cross and "Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates. This song was one of three played by the Rolling Stones at halftime during the Super Bowl XL in 2006 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
