Gristmill Traditional Cache

This cache is located in Freeman's Mill Park.  Permission has been granted by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation.  Permit #3006429.001.  The park resides on 12 acres and is open from sunrise until sunset.  It consists of a playground, a 1/2 mile paved trail, and the mill.  Restrooms are available.

This gristmill is located along the Alcovy River.  It is a mill typical of those built along rivers in Georgia in the mid 1900's. The property has changed ownership a number of times over the years, and therefore it has been known by different names - Swann's Mill, Alcovy River Gristmill, and Freeman's Mill.  A manufacturing census in 1800 found that this mill (running 10 hours a day) produced 14,500 pounds of corn mill and flour, and 54,000 pounds of animal feed yearly. In 1996, the mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in industry, engineering, architecture, and social history.  The Gwinnett County Commissioners purchased the land in 2001 from the Swann family.  After the purchase, the building was raised 5 feet to prevent damage from future floodwaters.  Through this purchase, the land and history is being preserved for future generations.

Note: the cache is not located at the mill, but is in the park. You should be able to take a footpath (not the nice paved park trail) to take you fairly close to the cache.  It gets a little thick after that.  The container has been well stocked with goodies.
