Geocache Description:

Update, 8-2017 Since the Grey Rhebok trail was opened the cache location and the container became too exposed to muggles and it was now the second time missing in action and sadly with a coin. I replaced the container with a smaller one that can only hold a logbook, I hope it will last longer.

Update, 9-2016 There is is a new hiking trail called : "Grey Rhebok" and the cache is now at the start of this trail.

After 10 years of having a small and successful breeding herd of Bonteboks in the reserve, see listing below, some nature expert decided that Bontebok do not prefer hills and the Bonteboks were removed except 2 females, I guess they preferred being at Tygerberg instead of becoming game biltong or relocation to some hunting farm or maybe another reserve, who knows.

The cache is hidden straight forward and I tried to make it obvious for cachers so that any impact to the environment is as little as possible.

According to a website of the City of Cape Town, the Tygerberg Nature Reserve is alive with the clip-clop of  Bontebok hooves after an absence for a good hundred  years. Six Bonteboks were captured and transferred from the Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West to the Tygerberg Reserve in May 2005.

But where are they?

During early morning walks and at quiet times during the winter season I have seen them at times very close, looking bored in my direction while I walked past them.

But quite often you do not see them at all and this is where this cache comes is. At the cache location you will notice the jeep track going down towards houses and a locked gate right down next to a dam. This track is not closed to the public but strangely it has no name and the staff will not encourage you to walk there, because down there next to the dam is were the Bonteboks like to spend their lazy days away from hikers and visitors.

Opening times: 7:30 until 18:00 weekdays and 7:30 until 19:00 weekends
