The River Drowes extends from Lough Melvin at Lareen to the Sea Pools near Tullaghan just outside the town of Bundoran and spans an area of about 5 miles in total. It is one of Ireland's premier Spring and Summer Salmon Fisheries and in addition holds good stocks of wild brown trout. It has accounted for the first recorded Irish Salmon of the season caught on rod and line on numerous occasions over the past 20 years.
This one of the main fishing areas on the Drowes and is just downstream from Lareen Park and Lough Melvin.
To get to the cache you have two options:
1) Park at waypoint 1 given, and walk up the road approximately 50 metres to a gate on the left. Enter through this gate and walk along the riverside path until you reach the cache. You can continue up the little trail at the cache until you reach the road, turn right and walk back to your car, or go back the way you came along the river.
2) Park at waypoint 2 given (this is a cache and grab option where there is only room for one car for a short time in a gateway) and walk down the short trail towards the cache. This would also be a better option if the riverbank is flooded.
Either way, you will have to approach initially from the South West (Kinlough) side as the Four Masters Bridge is closed for repair after winter flood damage.
Depending on the time of year, there may be a few fishermen Muggles, so please be stealthy in finding and replacing!
Please take care and use common sense as always when near water, especially with children. Young children would likely have to be carried or at least constantly held onto very tight along the timber riverside walkway.
This cache and the three others on the "Drowes Salmon Run" are dedicated to my late grandfather Jim Daly who loved this area of North Leitrim and was very active in the Drowes and Lough Melvin fisheries.
The cache is a medium size lunch box that has room for small trackables. Please replace carefully and as you found it.
