Cache is along the beach shoreline of beautiful Ile St Bernard in Chateauguay. Had to be moved due to flooding. L'Ile St Bernard est un trésor de Chateauguay et nous voulons encourager les autres amoureux de la nature à venir visiter. L'accès pour la journée est d'environ 10 $ pour une famille de 4 personnes. Vous n'avez pas besoin de s'éloigner du chemin de la plage officielle de plus de quelques pieds pour la cache. Ile St Bernard is a Chateauguay treasure and we want to encourage other nature lovers to come visit. Access for the day is about $10 for a family of 4. You need not stray off the beach path more than a few feet for this cache. Here, on Ile St Bernard, you will find a beautiful, virtually untouched forested island with swamps, meadows and sandy shoreline. The 8 kms of trails are well marked and circle the island with a couple of major dike trails cutting across the heart of the island (La Grande Digue / La Petite Digue). Ile St Bernard is a protected bird sanctuary and over 225 species of birds have been spotted here - the 2nd greatest variety in all of Quebec's refuges. If you are very quiet and have a good eye, you will most certainly encounter other wildlife such as dragonflys, turtles, foxes, frogs, snakes, raccoons, groundhogs, beavers and the biggest native animal to the island - Virgina White-Tailed Deer. The deer are very good at camouflage though and I have seen many hikers walk right by a quiet deer or two without noticing them at all. So keep a sharp eye out! History - The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, or Grey Nuns, acquired the island in 1765. Along with teaching, they constructed a bakery, encouraged the farming of the surrounding fertile land and had a continual presence here until 2011. In the early 2000s, with their numbers dwindling, the Nuns announced that the island was for sale. Developers were salivating to get their hands on the island as it looks out over Lac St Louis, Kahnawake and the island of Montreal with beautiful sunsets to the west. In 2011, the Town of Chateauguay purchased the habitable area from the Grey Nuns for $5 million. In addition to the land, the purchase included several buildings, a 19th century cemetary, apple orchards and one of North America's oldest largely intact windmills dating back to 1686. Some Chateauguayers believe we overpaid but I am just happy that Ile St Bernard is now public (for the time being). Si vous êtes très calme et avez un bon œil, vous rencontrerez sûrement d'autres animaux sauvages tels que libellules, tortues, renards, grenouilles, serpents, ratons laveurs, marmottes, castors et le plus grand animal indigène de l'île - Virgina White-Tailed Deer. Les cerfs sont très bons au camouflage et j'ai vu beaucoup de randonneurs marcher à côté d'un cerf tranquille ou deux sans les remarquer du tout. Alors gardez un œil aiguisé! Histoire - La Congrégation des Soeurs de la Charité, ou Sœurs Grises, acquit l'île en 1765. Avec l'enseignement, ils construisirent une boulangerie, encouragèrent l'agriculture des terres fertiles environnantes et y furent continuellement présents jusqu'en 2011. Au début des années 2000, avec leur nombre diminuant, les religieuses ont annoncé que l'île était à vendre. Les développeurs salivaient pour mettre la main sur l'île car elle donne sur le lac Saint-Louis, Kahnawake et l'île de Montréal avec de magnifiques couchers de soleil à l'ouest. En 2011, la Ville de Châteauguay a acheté la surface habitable des Sœurs Grises pour 5 millions de dollars. En plus de la terre, l'achat comprenait plusieurs bâtiments, un cimetière du XIXe siècle, des vergers de pommiers et l'un des plus anciens moulins à vent intacts de l'Amérique du Nord datant de 1686. Certains propriétaires de Châteauguay croient que nous sommes surpayés mais je suis heureux (pour l'instant).
