When you are standing next to the cache, you will be on the footprint of the old Cypress Freeway, which collapsed during the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. The old freeway cut through the middle of this neighborhood, which did not help the area at all. After the quake, the freeway was moved further west, and the old right of way was turned into a linear park, running along the newly renamed Mandela Parkway from 7th Street down to 34th Street.. What used to be a heavy industry part of town has transformed into a lot of residential homes, as well as lofts. Most of the industry is gone now, except for a few here and there hanging on. The park has really changed the area, turning a blighted section of median, into a pleasant walkway going from the BART station down the length of Mandela Parkway. It is still West Oakland though, and while it is fine during the daytime, I would be careful coming down here after dark.
There are a lot of muggles walking their dogs here, throughout the day, so stealth will be needed. This is a log only cache, so please bring your own pen along.
