I have recently visted Europe and spent a month in Switzerland and was immeresed in the world of JRR Tolkien and what were some of his inspirations to write Lord of the Rings. In 1911 Tolkien as a 19 year old toured around Switzerland where the landscape and curlture helped inspired many of the aspects of The Lord of the Rings. The inspiration for the Orc is a legendary creature from the Swiss Alps Regions. He is a demon who is up to mischief on the mountain pastures and in the alpine woods. In J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy writings, Orcs or Orks are a race of creatures who are used as soldiers and henchmen of Sauron and Saruman of The Lord of the Rings. Although not entirely dim-witted and occasionally crafty, they are portrayed as miserable beings, hating everyone including themselves and their masters, whom they serve out of fear. They make no beautiful things, but rather design cunning devices made to hurt and destroy.
