Navigation is a useful skill for all Scouts. Generally they want to use a GPS or other tracking technology, before they understand how a map and compass work.
A map is a 2D representation of the real world and the most useful map is a topographic map, as this shows contours as well as the other features
A compass consists of a magnetized metal needle that floats on a pivot point. The needle orientates itself to the magnetic field lines of the earth.
