Hamilton is where the "Rocky Horror" show's English-born creator, Richard O'Brien, watched horror and science-fiction movies at the old Embassy Theatre as a youth and developed a love for rock'n'roll.
In 25 November 2004 Richard returned to the city and led the Time Warp at the site of the Theatre and unveil a bronze statue of transvestite lead Riff Raff.
This Rocky Horror II cache replaces the original Rocky Horror cache GCMJ1D, set up by mitrou in 2005, and managed by Radionut50 since 2008.
In early 2022 construction of a new community theatre for Hamilton started, sadly by first taking over the little park that came into being after the Embassy Theatre was demolished. The published waypoint takes you to the construction site, so you see where the Embassy stood.
During the new Theatre construction, the famous Riff Raff statue has been relocated along the street – so your first task in the trail of this cache is to head to S 37 47.392 E 175 17.163, and gaze upon the famous scene.
The park, complete with statue is to be restored once the theatre is complete, so this cache will return to “normal” some time in the future!
To decode where the final is hidden, read the two plaques on and near the statue and find these dates:
O’Brian moved to Hamilton in 19HA
The design of the Embassy Theatre appeared in the 19F4 edition of NZ building progress
The Embassy was opened in 19G5 and closed in 19D9
And for the remaining letters:
C = A
E = C
B = E-H
The final is at S 37 4A.BCD 175 1E.FGH
Note that the final location is easily accessed from the public areas. Please don’t log that “the location is blocked off by construction”. The final cache is small, and OUTSIDE THE CONSTRUCTION FENCE.
Enjoy the walk to the final, and the area Richard O’Brian would likely have relaxed in during his breaks.
