Geocache Description:

A quick, easy grab in a beautiful historic place.

The iconic towers of the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane is a treasure - both past and future - for the community.  Designed by internationally renowned H.H. Richardson with landscape designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the 140 year old National Historic Landmark represented one of the most significant advances in the care and treatment of the mentally ill.  It was once believed the mentally ill were possessed by demons, but Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a noted psychiatrist of the late 1800's, believed the environment could both cause and cure mental illness.  He designed institutions that were filled with light and fresh air, and encouraged patients to enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds.  But these buildings are not just important to the past.  The buildings under rehabilitation will house a 90 room boutique hotel, conference center and space for an architectural museum.  Its economic impact will bring new jobs, new revenue and new visitors to Buffalo.  Just as the asylum brought light to people previously kept in the dark, the beautifully lit towers will light the way for future generations to appreciate this incredible place.
