The Halifax Armoury was built in the late 1890s and was used as a training and recuiting facility for volunteer militias, and as a transit point for troops departing for the Boer War and both World Wars. The Armoury was also a relief centre for displaced residents following the Halifax Explosion in 1917. It's unobstructed interior floor space has served as a drill grounds and was one of the largest such uninterrupted interior spaces in Canada at the time. The Armoury was also one of the first buildings in Halifax to be lit by electricity.
