Geocache Description:

The property that makes up VanRaalte Farms Park is located on the farm originally owned by Benjamin VanRaalte, son of Holland's founder. The property is home of the original farm house and barns. For the last several years The Holland Museum has hosted a Civil War Muster here. This letter box hybrid will take you on a short tour of the "battlefield" and encampment.

From the posted coords head up the hill toward the historic farmhouse. When you reach the historic marker take a moment and read about the history of this place. From there go to your left and follow the path towards the barns.

Soon the path will split, you could go toward the sugar shack where in early spring you can watch maple syrup being made, however that would be the wrong way. Instead follow the path to the right around behind the barns. Notice the old fence corner here? Make note of what it looks like for use further down the trail. Check out that huge old maple tree, see if you can tell how many times it has been tapped for syrup.

When you are done exploring continue on down the path. Soon you will come to a trail junction. The path to the left leads to a boardwalk and a nice overlook. You are welcome to wander down there and explore but that is not the way to the cache. Continue on down the trail. You will find yourself passing under the branches of another ancient tree. Shortly after that you will find a small clearing. If you look to the right you may see the remains of a fire pit or two. During the Civil War Muster you often find members of the Cavalry encamped here.

Here you will find a trail junction and some signage. Take the path to the left, through the thornapple tunnel. As you travel this path you will come across a split and a potentially squishy area. Take the path to the right. This will lead out into a large open area.

To the left is an area where many battles have been waged between the Union and Confederate forces. Continue on, sticking close to the tree line. A little less than halfway up the slope you will find a trail junction that leads to the right. Here one usually finds the Artillery set up.

Take this path. Along the way you will spot a bench that has been conveniently placed for you to stop and rest if you desire. As you travel on down the path you will be joined by another. If you look to your left you may see remains of a confederate encampment in the nearby clearing.

Continue on but keep your eyes open. If you are aware of your surroundings soon you will spot another fence corner similar to what was pointed out by the barns. If you discover the Camp Followers you've overshot the mark by a little bit.

Follow the fence line. Be safe and keep a close eye out for barbed wire. Soon you will reach another fence corner. What you seek is tucked away nearby. The container has a MIGO sticker on it. If you find anything else along the way please leave it, this park is used by more than geocachers.
