This series of geocaches explores the rich cryptozoological history of Hyndburn. Are these beasts fact or fiction? That is up to you to decide, however, there are three things that we ask.
1) If you experience anything unusual then please include it in your log. (Photographs please)
2) If you cache with small dogs or children please take extra care.
3) We wouldn't recommend doing these as night caches, especially not alone.
The legend of Ogobaxenpogo first comes to us through the journals of Timothy Tuppem, postal rider during the reign of Elizabeth the First (reign 1558-1603).
Whilst riding through Baxenden, on route to nearby Padiham, Timothy attempted to ford a small stream close to a lake and according to his account (journal IV, p12-13), met an unusual and somewhat frightening creature, which appeared "as if riseth from the very depths o' the infernal".
The unusual beast, which "appeareth to be the size of a small oxen" with "a visage most affeared" rose from the lake and menaced Timothy, attempting, in his words " to seize the manchet loaves, made from bread of high quality" from his saddlebag.
Timothy managed to fight of the beast, although it is not known what happened to the bread!
The trail of this unusual beast now goes cold until roughly the 1960s, when a new section of the A680 was built, which allowed people to catch a brief view of the lake, as before it required an approach over woodland tracks.
A courting couple, driving by on a night out caught a glimpse of something diving and rolling in the lake, and manged to take a photo, on a Brownie 127 camera- which unfortunately was too grainy to be able to make any positive identification of the beast.
More sightings followed, a few reported in the local paper- one even making it to national prominence!
In 1977 a farmer even reported a large creature, approximately 13-14 feet long carrying a dead chicken in its mouth running across the road, in the direction of the lake. He described it as long and sinuous, somewhat like a giant ferret, with short hair, and a head more like that of a dog!
Despite some obviously faked photographs in more recent years, (including one of a toy boat with an amusing monster head attached), people still claim to have seen the Ogobaxenpogo, and many discuss its possible heritage and what type of animal it really is.
The last sighting of this incredible animal occurred on March 12, 2012.
So keep your eyes peeled....the Ogobaxenpogo could be just around the next corner...
