Recently I was trying to come up with a theme for a series of geocaches to place. I wanted something that I could maintain a theme which could provide some interesting cache containers. My wife suggested that I mingle two of the things that I really enjoy: The music of Jimmy Buffett and geocaching thus was born the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Geocache Series. I decided to place a series of caches that somehow reflect the title of one of Jimmy’s songs.
For a little history, Jimmy recorded his first album, a folk rock album titled Down to Earth in 1970. The next year he moved to Key West where he developed the “beach bum” persona that has served him so well. Jimmy has done concert tours every year since 1976 and I’ve managed to attend a couple of them and they have to rate as my favorite concert experiences. Jimmy is not only a songwriter and musician but he is a master story teller, just listen to the lyrics of the songs that he has written. In his own words, “A good story never goes out of style.” He is in my opinion, one of the best all-around entertainers in music.
My first experience with Jimmy’s music was when I was 13 years old. I heard his song The Great Filling Station Holdup on the radio and was hooked. Over the span of his career he has released 49 albums (I currently own most of them and will have them all before I’m done). Now whenever things get too crazy, I put on Jimmy’s music and escape to Margaritaville, the tropical paradise somewhere in your mind. So instead of the blenders, fire up those GPS receivers and join me for a Parrothead’s tour of my favorite Jimmy Buffet songs.
The cache is easy to spot, it is my favorite color and stands out clearly against the background but it is not visible from the road. There is a good place to pull off the lightly travelled road near the cache. The terrain is steep and there is poison ivy, as well as the potential for ticks, snakes, spiders, and other creepy crawlers.
Jimmy’s duet with Martina Mc Bride, Trip Around the Sun, was the song that got me hooked on Jimmy’s music again. I guess I would have to call it the Parrothead birthday song. I have hidden this one in honor of my 53rd trip around the sun. Like it says in the song "I’m just gonna just enjoy this ride til it’s done!"
Here I'm singin' happy birthday, better think about the the wish I make
This year gone by ain't been a piece of cake
Everyday's a revolution, pull it together and it comes undone
Just one more candle and a trip around the sun
I'm just hangin' on while this old world keeps spinnin'
And it's good to know it's out of my control
If there's one thing that I've learned from all this livin'
Is that it wouldn't change a thing if I let go
No, you never see it comin', always wind up wonderin' where it went
Only time will tell if it was time well spent
It's another revelation, celebrating what I should have done
With these souvenirs of my trip around the sun
I'm just hangin' on while this old world keeps spinnin'
And it's good to know it's out of my control
If there's one thing that I've learned from all this livin'
Is that it wouldn't change a thing if I let go
Yes, I'll make a resolution
That I'll never make another one
Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun
Just enjoy this ride till it's done.
