This cache has been archived.

BruceTP: It is not time to bid farewell to the techno events for 2013 and I look forward to hosting more in the new year. Thank you to everyone who contributed in whatever way, whether presenting, providing munchies or just attending. We had a great social time together as well a learning something in the process.
It was a pleasure to host this as always.

Geocache Description:

This is a time to learn more about Geocaching and demystify the technology we use.

Geocaching 101 aka Empowering the newbies!
This will be the eleventh in the series Techno Events and the second for 2013. In recent months Geocaching has attracted a lot more new cachers to the game. We thought it expedient to have another techno event where we go back to basics and showcase some of the technologies available to make the game more enjoyable.

As cache owners it is evident that some of the new cachers have not been familiarised with the basics of the game, like when you replace a cache it must be in the exact spot from whence it came. I have had, on occasion, to look for my own cache because it is not where I had planted it. Or, have you experienced it that after a newbie has found your cache it then goes missing because that have left it very conspicuous?

Alternatively, how many trackable TBs and coins have gone astray because the newbies have not been told how to log and track them?

There is only one solution… Education and ongoing education. Hence the importance of this event. It is a chance for you to invite a newbie to come along with you and learn more about geocaching and how to play the game. Many of them would not normally go to an event because they either don't know about them or would be too shy to come on their own.

I would therefore like to encourage the regulars to keep a look out for newbies logging finds on you caches and drop them a note to welcome them and then to personally invite them to this event. There is nothing to beat the personal touch.

If you would like to join us for the technical session, please feel free to bring your laptop and GPS or other device along so that you can get hands on experience with the geocaching website as well as trying out some other tools and tricks of the trade. Post your "will attend" log early as seating is on a "first come first served" basis for the technical part. Please indicate whether you will be coming to the "byte", "bite" or both. It will assist me in the catering and seating arrangements. However, should you want to come just to meet up with everybody and renew caching friendships, discover some new coins or just enjoy a sundowner, braai fires will be available from 17:00 onwards. Please bring along your own "dop & chop".

The full program for the afternoon may be subject to change but here goes...

13:00 - 14:00 Welcome, settle in and get ready. We shall kick off with the practical session by Graham of ThomasfamilyZA dealing with aspects of creating listings (different types of cache, getting coordinates, creating listing and submitting it.) Included in this talk will be planting caches and suitability of containers as well as locations.

14:00 - 14:30 This will be a Q&A session where you can interact with the reviewers and get clarity on the guidelines.

14:30 - 14:45 Refreshments will be served. It will be too hot for the legendary "techno" soup but there should be plenty of other munchies to keep the wolf from the door.

14:45 - 15:30 Anton from DamhuisClan will give a brief overview of GSAK and other interesting tools and useful software including geocheckers to make your geocaching life easier.

15:30 - 15:45 More refreshments will be served while you give your brain a rest.

15:45 - 16:30 Graham will continue with a talk on “mobile caching” with phones/ipads etc as well as writing logs on the fly using this technology. If time permits he may address the use of these devices in finding Wherigo caches as well.

16:30 till whenever... Braai, socialising, swapping coins, discovering new coins while having a great time enjoying yourselves to the full. There may be geocaching hardware available if you want to stock up on trackables and the like. Please bring along whatever you want to eat and drink and enjoy meeting everybody else. Braai fires will be provided.
