Geocache Description:

Special thanks to Liz Lubrani for her permission and enthusiasm to place all the caches in the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens.

PLEASE READ!!!!

All caches placed in the garden can be retrieved without stepping into any of the planting beds or pulling or picking any plants or flowers.  All caches (except Bamboo Bonus Cache) can be seen from the walkways and without moving anything.  There are no “evil” sprinkler hides.

Geocaches may only be found during normal garden hours (see bottom of page).

* NOTE * Due to a recent change in policy our furry little friends (dogs) are no longer allowed in the gardens.

Bamboo: Worlds Tallest Grass

There are over 1000 species of Bamboo in the grass family, Poaceae.  They grow naturally on every continent except Europe, the Arctic and the Antarctic.  It is the worlds tallest grass, some kinds grow up to 100 feet tall with stalks up to 6” in diameter.  Bamboo is also the worlds fastest growing plant, some having been clocked growing more than 40 inches in 24 hours!  The average rate of growth however, is 2 ½ inches per day.

Bamboo stalks are hollow with solid cross-walls that add strength and rigidity.  Each stalk of bamboo lives for 5-10 years, or longer in some varieties.  It grows to its full size in about 2 months, then gets no larger.

Stalks of bamboo, called culms, begin as a shoot that arise from the roots of underground stems, called rhizomes.  Very young bamboo shoots can be eaten as a vegetable.
