Geocache Description:

The Rail Splits Here

This stretch of the line was never officially part of the Sacramento Valley Railroad (SVR), but it was part of what the SVR morphed into. The original line ran from Sacramento to Folsom. For some reason the tracks were 7 inches wider than standard gauge, which was based on the Roman Chariot, sorry I digress. SVR began operation in 1856, which makes it the oldest rail line west of the Mississippi. The first president of SVR was William Tecumseh Sherman, yep the same guy who marched on Atlanta, several years later.

Several mergers and consolidations later SVR became the Sacramento and Placerville Railroad. Only to be acquired by the Northern Railway a subsidiary Southern Pacific (SP), then of course the SP… Sometime in the late 50s passenger rail service stopped along this line but lumber was being hauled down this line from Camino until 1986 on the Camino Placerville & Lake Tahoe Railroad

Today the right of way belongs to Sacramento Placerville Transportation Corridor Joint Powers Authority, the El Dorado County sections is open to the public from Camino to the El Dorado/Sacramento county line.

Don't know the history of this truck farm but it must have been a pretty big operation to have their own siding off an SP line. Something is still going on there but what? No idea.
