đ  About Old School âď¸
You are looking at a building that was once home to a one-room school house. For many years, a number of today's residents in Duran attended school in this building. The school was for grades 1-6. The teacher lived in Duran and walked to work and so did the children. No school buses, no Common Core Curriculum. This was a rural school that taught the regular subjects as well as good values. As the population in Duran diminished, the school finally closed its doors in 1970. The students in Duran attended school in the neighboring towns of Vaughn, Encino, or Corona. The nice brick building is starting to show signs of age. The back side of the building houses a large gymnasium with a stage. The old school now serves as a community center of sorts for the few Duran residents.
While you are here, take some photos of the old school as well as the beautifully restored building next door. That sandstone building is home to an active volunteer fire department. Thanks for visiting and enjoy your day!
