Geocache Description:

Take a walk in the dark, dark, wild, enchanted woods. This is a very satisfying walk up through Mars lee woods, and Rhymer's Glen.

The safest place to park is probably the car park for the Borders General Hospital. You are allowed to park there for up to four hours. Beware of muggle visiting hours though. It gets busy. From there you need to find the single track road to Cauldshiels Loch. This should be to the right side of the hospital (if you are facing the building). The road is passed the share care centre. Keep on this road until your reach a wooden sign pointing you to Rhymer's Glen. Follow this path from here. This can be a rather muddy trail, so wear sturdy footwear.  The cache is located halfway through the woods. If you enjoy walking, I would recommend, after visiting the cache you could follow the path up and out of the woods. This takes you up to the edge of Bowden moor. From here follow the signs to Cauldshiels Loch, follow the wooded path next to the loch, then make your way through the gate. Follow the dirt track back to the road, which will lead you back down to the hospital. Rhymer's glen once had a deciduous forest, but is now mostly coniferous. JMW Turner did a painting of the waterfall here whilst visiting Sir Walter at Abbotsford in 1831. This was also one of the favoured haunts of Thomas the Rhymer and his fairy friends. So if you hear any odd noises or your GPS readings aren't quite right, it could very well be the fairies. Or perhaps it could just be the rather agitated jays who inhabit the glen. Or it could be the trees interfering with your GPS. Just keep to the tack and you'll be alright. Update- I am sorry to say all the trees have gone. This use to be one of my favourite walks , now it resembles the Somme. The path is still there. The cache is still there. But the trees have gone. However, there has been some new trees planted. Native ones too. So in perhaps 30 years it might look ok. Maybe the mini cachers will get to enjoy it. Caudlshiels received the same treatment, I'm sorry to say. A huge loss for the wildlife that inhabited the area. I've not seen a single red squirrel there since the devastation. But Bowden moor is still the same, they can't ruin that, hopefully.
