Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Bernwood Forest Geocaches. The Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and all caches in the series have been given special permission for their placement by the Forestry Commission. All the caches have been designed for children and those new to geocaching. Boxes vary in size from small clip-lock type food containers up to ammo cans. The parking for the forest is at N 51° 48.048 W 001° 06.922

Our largest snake, the Grass Snake, particularly likes wetland habitats, but can also be found in dry grasslands and in gardens, especially those with a pond nearby. Lays eggs in rotting vegetation, often in compost heaps. Like all reptiles, Grass Snakes hibernate, usually from October to April. During the summer, they can be found basking near favourite ponds or even swimming. Usually greenish in colour, with a yellow collar and black neck patches. Females are bigger than males. Often found near water and frequently swims.

Widespread in England and Wales, but not found in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Also absent from the Isles of Scilly and most of the Channel Islands. It can be seen between April and October

This cache is an ammo box. There is a certificate for the First To Find. Please feel free to swap any item in the ‘cache but please remember, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value in return.
Renumbered from 9 to 4 to create a more logical series around the forest.

First To Find honours go to: Mackiespal

N.B. All the caches in this series have been granted permission to be placed by Joanne Mason, the Beat Manager for the forest, and written permission has been passed to the Reviewers. The Forestry Commission will not give permission for any more caches in these woods. Please do not ask the Reviewers to place any further caches as the FC will not allow it and placement of further caches will result in geocaching being banned in this area.
