Geocache Description:

Berovo

The eastern part of Macedonia is geocachers’ TERRA INCOGNITA! Let's explore this part of the country, blessed by God with natural beauty, diversity of landscapes, hospitable people and warm sun.

Water means life, and in Eastern Macedonia the life bringing river is Bregalnica. Bregalnica is the second largest river (225 km) in the Republic of Macedonia. It starts as a spring in Maleshevo mountains near the city of Berovo. It flows through Maleshevo region and near the cities of Delchevo, Makedonska Kamenica, Kochani, Vinica and Štip, before joining the river Vardar on its way to the Aegean Sea. Some call it “Nectar of Maleshevo”, carrying the sweet essence of this region. This River along its picturesque path fills Berovo and Kalimanci Lake, irrigates rice fields, gives fish and supports diversity of animal and plant wealth. The hunt after caches along this river will reveal to you many interesting places in this part of Macedonia.

Berovo city

About this cache:Entering to Maleshevo region is like to enter another world, indeed. The nature and the people together created a place on Earth where you can enjoy all the gifts your body, heart and soul could wish. This cache will introduce to you the city of Berovo, a small town near the Maleshevo Mountains, 161 km from Skopje, a seat of the municipality of Berovo.

The Church of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

Berovo stands at 830–900 m a.s.l., embraced by Maleshevo Mountains. The Bregalnica River, Berovo lake and the forest of the Maleshevo Mountains are the most popular sites for tourists who love hiking. Berovo craftsmen are well known for their skill in traditional wood crafting. Gourmands will enjoy traditional specialties, as cheese, baked potatoes, pies, roasted lamb meat etc…

This cache will introduce you to center of Berovo city. Close to the cache lies the church Rozhdestvo of Presveta Bogorodica, (Church of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin), built in 1912 and consecrated in 1922. The bell tower was built in 1930.

Near the church, in a beautiful building from the late 19th century, the museum is located. This building used to be a school. The museum It consists of one big room with several posters (in Macedonian) about the wars and revolution in Macedonia. There are also a reconstruction of a Macedonian room, some costumes, tools etc. The pictures summarize most of it.

In the center, close to the town square stay statues of Dimitar Berovski (revolutionary) and Nikola Petrov Rusinski (revolutionary and socialist).

Hungry????

The nature lovers can enjoy hiking around the Berovo Lake and Maleshevo Mt. Lake Berovo is about 7 km out of the center of Berovo. The Berovo Lake is an artificial reservoir with a big dam.Unfortunately, the lake is not suitable for sunbathing and swimming, because the shore is steep and overgrown and cannot easily be reached. At the Berovo Tourist Information Center you can get a free map with 5 hiking trails in the surroundings. A description of these trails can also be found on the website of Hotel Manastir. However, it might be the best to hire a local guide, since, generally, marking of the trails in Macedonia is quite poor.

How to get there: Drive toward Shtip - Kochani - Vinica - Berovo. You can also get this town from Delchevo, drive toward Berovo, or: from Strumica drive toward Berovo (between these two towns you will climbe the beautiful Ograzhden Mountains).

The cache is micro film plastic container.

Please, be very careful when getting out, logging and putting back the cache, in order to protect it of Muggles! In case of lost of the cache the owner can visit the location and restore it only 2-3 per year! Thanks.
