The Maroondah Aqueduct Bridge Traditional Cache

This micro cache is in the Plenty Gorge Park in the vicinity of the western end of an unused bridge across the Plenty River.

The bridge is unused and cannot be crossed. To find the cache it is not necessary to climb on, over, under or through any part of the bridge or the barbed wire fence. To do so could be dangerous.

The bridge was built in the late 1880s as part of the Maroondah Aqueduct system which carried water from the Maroondah Reservoir to Melbourne. The system consisted of 25 miles of open cement and brick lined channels, 12 tunnels and 14 wrought iron siphons (pipes) to carry the water over ravines such as the Plenty River.

The Bridge’s pipes were replaced with a stainless steel pipe in 1977, which was relocated under the Plenty River. The Pipe Bridge structure remains intact, with a portion of original pipe located nearby, beside the walking trail on the eastern side of the river.

Parking is available in Kariboo Grove, Greensborough. From here you can follow a narrow trails northwards towards the cache. Alternatively, parking is available in Queens Gardens, Bundoora with a wide trail leading down to the bridge.

The cache is well camouflaged and concealed.
