Geocache Description:

Welcome to our first cache in Ottawa!

This cache is not at the posted coordinates; however, it is in the immediate area and can be located by answering some questions about Ottawa’s former Triple-A baseball team, the Lynx!

Baseball was a big part of growing up in my family, so many great summer afternoons and evenings were spent here watching the Ottawa Lynx! Watching each play, cheering with the crowds, wearing a glove to catch foul balls, and eating the mandatory ball park hot dog were all essential parts of a visit to JetForm Park. Though Ottawa currently has no baseball team, hopefully we can provide you with a piece of the experience as you learn about the Lynx and visit this great spot.

The cache’s location can be determined with these questions, the answers to which can all be found together online. For any answer in letter form you must convert it to numbers (A=1, B=2, etc.) and find its digital root (for example, the word Lynx would equal 3). All calculations are simple, but will require a calculator. Good luck!

  • Add the year the Lynx began to play in Ottawa to the two letter acronym for the league they competed in. Call this four digit number A.
  • The Lynx began as the Triple-A Minor League Affiliate (farm team) of which Major League Baseball team (team name only, not the city)? Add this five letter word to the number of seasons they were affiliated with this team to find B. B will have a digital root of 8.
  • The Lynx only won the league championship, the Governors’ Cup, one time; in what year did they win? Divide this year by the name of the team they defeated (five letters) to find C.
  • On which day in September 2002 did the Lynx become the farm team for the Baltimore Orioles? Multiply this date by the number of seasons the Lynx were affiliated with Baltimore to find D.
  • How many seasons did the Lynx play in Ottawa, and how many MLB teams were they affiliated with in total over that time? Add these numbers together to find E.
  • On which day in September 2007 did the Lynx play their last game in Ottawa? Subtract this number from the total number of games the team won in Ottawa to find F.

Add together your answers for all six questions (A to F). This will give you a four digit number with a digital root of 9.

To find the North coordinates, multiply this number by .00666719. Rounded to the nearest thousandth, this will give you a number which you can plug directly into N 45 ##.###.

To find the West coordinates, multiply this number by .01035392. Rounded to the nearest thousandth, this will give you a number which you can plug directly into W 75 ##.###.

The cache is a common micro container with no room for a pen, so don’t forget to bring your own. The area nearby is currently under construction, so you must approach the GZ from the parking lot. Also, our GPSr seemed a little confused at the hiding spot so we have added a very helpful hint if you need it. It will not be difficult to find, but may require some stealth!

Enjoy!
