Geocache Description:

Monkton Wyld Wood is a remnant of old beech woodland surrounding recent conifer plantations. In spring the bluebells and foxgloves are magnificent.

This small patch of woodland is the rump of the Wootton Fitzpaine estate that belonged to my late grandfather, A.D Pass. In it's heyday the estate ran from Charmouth up to Lambert's Castle and from Monkton Wyld across to Whitchurch. The Forestry Commission hold it a 999 year lease, but my family retain the hunting, shooting, fishing and other obscure legal rights to the land. Which means we can picnic there, and not much else. The waypoint "Tree" is not part of the cache, but marks an interesting anomaly: a large Lawson's Cypress, native of California, has been left standing by the Forestry Commission and stands out above the surrounding Larch plantation.

PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH FROM THE CLOSEST LANE TO THE NORTH, as this will involve climbing fences and crossing private land that is not part of my estate. The main tracks are easily walkable but the steeper beechwood slopes can be a slippery scramble. The cache is best approached from the track to the south, and if you park at the A35 Forestry Commission entry your route will take you close to Benjamin Franklin's Square, an interesting puzzle cache. Take care as you pull off the A35 as the traffic is fast and there is no footpath.

As an absentee landlord, I obviously need an agent to keep an eye on things, so many thanks to Weary Banker & Bookworm who know the area and maintain this cache.

Prize for First to Find is one year's rent from one of the 60 odd acres. You can dream of the inherited wealth that this brings the absentee landlord.
