Madiba Lock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Knagur Green: Due to no response from the CO after the request to maintain or replace the cache, Which was disabled in July 2017 and lasted commented on by the CO after a note in September 2018. Still no answer after my next note in November 2018

I am archiving it to, stop it showing on the listings and/or to create place for the geocaching community.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported. Caches that have been archived for lack of maintenance will not be unarchived. This is explained in the Help Center

I would suggest that the CO place a new cache listing at this location once they have sorted out the lock problems, if another CO has not taken the spot in the interim.

Thank you for understanding

Geocache Description:

Madiba Legacy Locks

RIP Madiba 18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013

Many people walk past this corner wondering why there are so many locks on the fence,

well here's the story...

The Nelson Mandela Lock Legacy In an attempt by the community to keep Madiba’s legacy alive.

Many people, young and old, from around the Durban area have decided to put “legacy lock” padlocks on a fence at the corner of Gordon and Florida road. The fence belongs to eThekwini Metro, and community organizers say they decided to go ahead with the initiative even though they had not been granted permission by the municipality yet on 9 July 2013. They had requested meetings with eThekwini tourism officials but they had not made time to meet yet due to a busy schedule.

This group of community organizers hoped that many people would get involved near and far and show their support. “Mandela transcends any group, gender, race or age, or any specific subculture. It would be great if there’s a way of keeping his legacy  “What we are doing here is trying to remember Nelson Mandela’s legacy. Sometimes it’s quite complicated to leave flowers, because flowers will die, so we have to find other ways."

Its called a ‘legacy lock’, and a way of saying ‘I’m committed to keeping Nelson Mandela’s legacy alive’.

Hopefully going forward, more people will come and put a padlock on this fence.
