bergbluemchen: After almost 10 years, the time for this cache has come.
The site seems to have changed a lot. The information signs are not there any more, the walking circuits have changed and Viscacha does not jump any more. It's sad, but it's time to say good bye. :(

Visit the fascinating earth pyramids in Valle de la Luna.

You don't have to wait for my answer to log the cache (I'll get back to you if something is wrong) but you have to at least send me the answer BEFORE you log this cache as found!

Valle de la luna está situdada aproximadamente a 10 Kilometros de la ciudad La Paz, en la provincia de Pedro Domingo Murillo, Departamento La Paz, Bolivia. Esta compuesta de un area donde la erosión ha desgastado la gran parte de una montaña. Debido a que está compuesto por arcilla en lugar de roca, a lo largo de los siglos los elementos han creado una extraña obra de arte, como un desierto lleno de estalagmitas. Es similar a otra zona de La Paz que se conoce como el Valle de las Animas. Donde se celebra una famosa fiesta, el Día de los Muertos.

Las montañas que rodean La Paz están compuestas de arcilla. Es interesante observar qué el contenido mineral varía en gran medida en cada montaña. Como resultado, los lados de las montañas son de colores diferentes, creando ilusiones ópticas muy llamativas. La mayoría de ellas son de color beige claro o marrón claro. Hay también áreas casi rojas, con regiones de color violeta oscuro.

El interesante paisaje lunar fue creado por la erosión durante varios años. Las masas de roca estéril fueron cayendo de las montañas y presionadas entre ellas. Contenían una mezcla de rocas más blandas y más sólida. Dentro de un tiempo, el tipo de roca más suaves fueron más afectados por la erosión que las rocas más duras, dando lugar a las estructuras que se pueden ver hoy en día. Cada año hay más lluvia y la erosión aun sigue cambiando las estructuras. Columnas y cuevas pueden derrumbarse como resultado de la erosión. Valle de la Luna (moon valley in English) is situated about 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz, in the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia. It is composed of an area where erosion has worn away the majority of a mountain. Due to being composed of clay rather than rock, over the centuries the elements have created a somewhat odd work of art here, like a desert filled with stalagmites. It is similar to another zone of La Paz that is known as el Valle de las Animas (the Valley of the Souls). It is an important site of the famous holiday, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

The mountains surrounding La Paz are composed of clay. It is interesting to note that the mineral content of the mountains varies greatly between individual mountains. As a result, the sides of the mountains are different colors, creating very striking optical illusions. A majority of them are a clear beige or light brown color. There are also areas that are almost red, with sections of dark violet.

The interesting moon-like landscape was created by erosion over several years. Masses of rock waste were flushed down from the mountains and pressed together. They contained a mixture of softer and more solid rocks. Within time, the softer rock kinds were more affected by erosion than the harder rocks, resulting in the structures you can see today. Every year there is more rain and erosion so there is still ongoing change. Columns and caves can collapse resulting from the erosion. Maybe you won't even find all the formations from my picture when you get here ...

Si no puede encontrar los tableros (puede que falten), busque las respuestas preguntándole a alguien o trate de pensarlo usted mismo. Conteste las siguientes preguntas:
a) Nombre los tres tipos de tierras que aparecen cerca de La Paz.
b) ¿Que son Zócalos?
2. Paseo por el sitio y ver las señales. Quién saltó allí? Describe la formación del salto. ¿Qué es lo que ves? ¿Es arcilla pura o incluye piedras? Si usted puede ver piedras mezcladas con la arcilla, cual es su diámetro medio? Si no puede encontrar la formación de salto, nombre su favorita formación y responda las preguntas para esa.
3. Upload una foto de usted lugar favorito en el valle incluyendo a usted mismo o su GPS.

To log this earthcache you have to send me an email with answers to the following questions:
1. On the site of Valle de la Luna you will find several information signs giving you much more informatio about the geological characteristics. If you cannot find the boards (they might be missing) then find out the answers by asking someone or try to think about it yourself. Answer the following questions:
a) Name the three types of lands that appear near La Paz.
b) What are Socles?
2. Walk through the site and look at the signs. Who jumped here? Describe the formation of the jump. What do you see? Is it pure clay or does it include stones? If you can see stones mixed with the clay, what is their average diameter? If you cannot find the jumping formation, then name your favourite one and answer the questions for that one.
3. Upload a picture of you favourite spot in the valley including yourself or your GPS.
