Road to the Field Station Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

RedHiker: Hi, Shazam

I see that your cache has not been found for multiple years. It may still be there or could be missing, or have damage, but enough time has passed since it was successfully located that you should visit it. I'm going to disable it to remove it from the list of active caches. Please stop by and check on your geocache and see if it is still there. If it is, then please leave a note for geocachers and re-enable it. This will let people know they can look for it again.

If you can't verify your cache is still in place, then it might be time to archive it.

As the cache owner of a disabled geocache, there are three options available for you:

  1. Visit your cache, verify any issues with it, then fix and enable your cache within the next 30 days. so that it can move out of this state of limbo.

  2. After visiting your cache, if you are not able to fix it in the next 30 days, then please create a new log note on your cache page letting the reviewer know you are aware that your cache needs attention and how/when you plan to take care of it. The reviewer will monitor and reply to these notes.

  3. You can archive your cache, remove your container, and clean up the area as needed.

Please note that Geocaching HQ has put greater emphasis on "refreshing the gameboard," which means that the volunteer Reviewers will be more actively following up to make sure caches are maintained or archiving them as needed to free up space for new caches to replace any old ones that were not being properly maintained.

If none of the actions listed above are taken by you as the cache owner, this geocache will be archived by a volunteer reviewer.

Please note that geocaches that are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance are not eligible to be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

Right down the trail is a bit of Cal State Hayward history. There are nearby caches so placement is just up the road from the Field Station.

There once was a plaque dedicating the Ecological Field Station. It read: “Ecological Field Station California State College Hayward  - For the study of flora and fauna of coastal California.  Dedicated April 25, 1970.”

I have always been fascinated by the Ecological Field Station at California State University, Hayward. When I first began working on this campus I would love to walk down here to hear the seals.  After the Field Station was closed it became a haven for graffiti artists, even after the building was razed. I’ve included a photo overview of the current “art work”. You might want to post a close up pic of your favorite.

A bit of history: Ron Schusterman was a Research Marine Biologist.  He was also Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Biology at California State University at Hayward, where he taught for 30 years. In 1971, he moved his operation to the Ecological Field Station at California State University at Hayward to study the behavior and physiology of pinnipeds. In 1985 Ron moved his research program to Long Marine Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Ron passed away in 2010 but his shared passion for exploring animal behavior and cognition was fundamental to the growth of comparative psychology and marine mammalogy and his legacy continues today.

Cache is right off the trail. No need to go up the hill or cross country. If you choose to come from the campus, parking permits are required and can be purchased at locations around campus. Parking is free on the weekend. Bring your own pen and be sure to return the cache to the same spot and hide it (or better) as you found it.
