Geocache Description:

Quoybirse Standing Stone

This cache is a 500mm Clip Lock container with swaps and room for TB’s and Geocoins.

I believe this is Westray's only Standing Stone. This Standing Stone can be seen quite clearly on the sky line from the area close to Anchors Away cache. It is less obvious when in close vicinity as it is obscured by the buildings. As a result many of the locals are unaware of it’s existence. From Anchors Away it is just over a mile. Follow the road up to Braehead Church   Waypoint Reference point C14Q1RV N 59 18.531 W 002 58.502   then follow the track along side the church. At the end of the building you may encounter one or two ‘Orkney gates.’ These are made from barbed wire and posts strung between two posts.   The first when in place will be across the track, the second will be immediately after the first on the left hand side which will give access to the field that the Standing Stone is in.   They can be unhooked to allow you to pass through but must be replaced immediately on passing through. There is an electric wire just inside the field which can be unhooked with the insulated handle and again must be replaced immediately. It may be possible to just duck under it. The track and field can be very muddy at times so waterproof footwear is recommended. A bracing walk which can be done in an hour and well worth the effort for the views.

The cache has been replaced due to the repositioning/rebuilding of walls and is now only 25 paces from the Standing Stone.
