Geocache Description:

Enjoy another cache in a wonderful and safe SW Portland neighborhood.  This cache is a bit exposed and on a street corner with a bit of traffic.  Be aware of muggles and don't let the kiddies wander.

April Hill is a small city owned park in the Maplewood neighborhood in far southwest Portland.  The land where the park is located was part of an old donation land claim.  In May 1873, Francis and Caroline Niebur filed a claim on the land between what is now SW 55th and SW 65th streets and from SW Vermont street for a mile south.  The Nieburs were the first white inhabitants of the area which was still very wild.  All kinds of wildlife including bears were frequently seen on the homestead.  The Nieburs built a small log cabin.  Indians frequently stopped at the cabin and Caroline would call them in and feed them.  Eventually they built a larger house, a barn, and other out buildings.  All of these buildings were located where April Hill Park sits today.

I am not certain where the name April Hill came from, but it is a wonderful little park with an athletic field, a playground, and plenty of room to roam.  Bring the kids when doing this cache and they can play while you do the hard work.  There are three main entrances to the park and I have caches on all three.  There is also a cache in the park.  Here is an opportunity to make four finds in a few minutes while enjoying a great location and doing a little hiking.

This cache is located on an entrance street just outside the park.  You have seen caches like this before.  Please be gentle when opening the cache, you don’t have to rip it.  Please put it back as you found it.

As with most urban caches you will need to bring a pen.  Please don’t claim this one without signing the log!  Also, you may find a small geotool (tweezers) handy.

Grab a cache and enjoy the park and enjoy my neighborhood!

Congratulations to CinderTheDog on a very quick FTF!!!!
