Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed with the permission of the Stewardship Coordinator of the Michigan Nature Association; please visit them at www.MichiganNature.org This cache is an appropriate container at the furthest part of Dauner trail. There is only room for the log and you may need tweezers to retrieve it so be prepared. Please be sure to replace the container in the same orientation you found it (log side toward the back) to help prevent seepage.

This cache is placed as a tribute to the late great Tigers broadcaster, Ernie Harwell. Harwell took the position of the Tigers broadcaster in 1960 and called games for 4 decades. I can remember going to my grandparent’s cottage in the summer and my grandma always had the baseball game on the radio. Ernie’s voice could be heard from inside the cottage while we swam in the canal. We used to listen to each game hoping to hear his trade mark call of a Tiger home run: "That one is loooooong gone!" Harwell's Tiger broadcasts were best known for his anecdotes, knowledge of the history of the game, and his catch phrases. Batters called out on strikes: "stood there like the house by the side of the road” and foul balls were: "taken home by a man from Sterling Heights", or other random Michigan cities. It wasn’t until he was retired for several years that he admitted he had no idea where the people were actually from!

Unfortunately, Ernie died of cancer in 2010…one day before he was supposed to receive the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting.

If you have a fond memory of Ernie, please feel free to leave it when you log your find.

Congrats to Smitherington for FTF!
