Geocache Description:

Eight species of Owls are on record as being found in Kentucky.  Of those eight only three the Eastern Screech Owl, the Barred Owl, and the Great Horned Owl, are considered common to the state.  The Barn Owl, the Short Eared Owl, and the Northern Saw Whet Owl are considered uncommon while the Snowy Owl and Long Eared Owl are considered extremely rare to be seen in Kentucky.

The Great Horned Owl (Bubo Virginianus) is the largest of the Kentucky Owl species.   It is found throughout the state and lives here year round.  It prefers forested areas and semi-open farmland.   It prefers to refurbish and reuse old large bird stick type nests like those built by hawks but will build a nest in hollow trees on occasion.

Great Horned Owl

The Eastern Screech Owl (Otus Asio) is a Year-round resident found throughout the state.  It prefers Forested areas, and semi-open farmland.  Gray and red colored Screech Owls are found in Kentucky.  It is the smallest of the commonly found owls with adults weighing in on average at just 6.5 ounces.

The Barred Owl (Strix Varia)  Is found throughout the state and is a Year-round resisdent.  I prefers forested areas mainly in the valleys or bottomland where it will nest in hollow trees

The Barn Owl (Tyto Alba) though not common to Kentucky have been found predominately in the Central and Western parts of the state.  The prefer grasslands, crop fields, and marshy areas over forested areas.  They have been known to build nests in many different places including barns silos, grain bins, and hollow trees.

Short Eared Owl (Asio Flammeus) are not common to Kentucky but have be spotted in the winter time in open grassy areas.  They do not usually nest in Kentucky but visit in the winter before heading north in milder weather for nesting.
