Geocache Description:

Kentucky has two species of foxes, the red fox and the gray fox.  The red fox is the predominate of the two and can be seen throughout Kentucky in both rural and urban settings.  They have an amber to red coat, black legs, and bushy white-tipped tail.  They can be found throughout the woods of Kentucky but they prefer fields, meadows, and open areas. Red foxes are the largest of the fox family in the US with some sub species adults weighing up to 30 pounds are more.

Gray foxes are usually smaller than red foxes with an adult weighing up to 15 pounds or more.  They have a salt and pepper gray coat with reddish orange highlights on their ears, necks, stomach, and legs. They are best distinguished from the Red Fox by the black tip on their tail.  They have been observed in 96 counties throughout Kentucky but they are more elusive than red foxes since they prefer secluded forest areas. Gray foxes have hooked claws and are excellent tree climbers.

Fox Facts:

1. Foxes are primarily nocturnal as they will rest in their home (den) in a hollow tree, Stump, or burrow during the day and are active in the evening hours.

2. Foxes are omnivores that prefer a diet of small rodents and insects but they will eat whatever forest fruits are readily available.  They play an important part in our ecosystem by controlling the rodent population.

3. Foxes are very agile with the ability to easily jump over a 6 foot high fence.  They are also very shy and avoid animal larger than themselves.  So danger to humans from a fox is minimal unless the rare instance they have contacted rabies then they could be more aggressive.

4. Red and Gray foxes reproduce once each year in the spring.  The female fox call Vixens have an average liter size of 4 to 6 offspring called kits.  Both the male and female fox help take care of the kits.

Although only Red Fox is currently on Bernheim’s list of mammals observed in its forest,  Kentucky Fish and Wildlife indicates there have been observations of Gray Fox in Bullitt, and surrounding counties so the possibility of Gray Fox in Bernheim certainly exists.
