Christ Church Helme
The hamlet of Helme consisits of a few houses radiating from the 'square', a primary school and the church.
According to the web site 'British Listed Buildings' it is a Gothic Revival Church in Decorated Style built in 1859. Charles Brook, a local mill owner endowed the church in memory of his late son. It is said that his daughters, 'the Miss Brooks', chose the site for the church when they saw a rainbow, the end of which appeared to be in Helme. It is one of the few churches in Yorkshire to have a wooden shingle spire and to have painted texts of the beatitudes and the creed on the inside walls.
Both the inside and outside were used several times during the filming of 'Last of the Summer Wine'. The late Lord Lichfield used the grounds to shoot photographs for an edition of 'Wedding' magazine.
Unfortunately after a series of vandalism attacks the church is kept locked outside service hours (11.15 each Sunday) or when being used by the school, but the outside is worth a visit. If you do want to see inside contact the CO who will put you in touch with one of the church wardens.
If you do this as a park and grab DON'T ATTEMPT betwen 8.30am to 9.15am or 2.30pm to 3.45pm on school days. There is a small car park very near the cache and a larger one on the school side which is entered by turning left before the telephone box in the village.
“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
