This is Great trees 3 - Norway Maple.
It is located on the edge of Lilliput Park in Chipping Sodbury which has plenty more great trees in it and is worth a nice walk around seeing as you are here already !! There is also some great play equipment for the geo-kids after the find !
Fairly easy find but a little off the beaten track so please take care when looking for this one.
This is a continuation of a series comemerating great trees in the British Isles, and giving the people who find these caches a little information on the tree where the cache is hidden instead of the usual "base of tree" or "multi trunked tree" and that is as far as the tree itself is usually mentioned. The trees in this series can be anywhere and any size as long as it is celebrating the species concerned and gives information on the tree !!
This is a non native tree to the United Kingdom and it is native to most of the northern continental Europe. Most of the Norway Maples in this country are planted as ornamental trees in parks and gardens which is why this one is here. Beautiful golden leaf colours in the autumn and glorious green throughout the summer. A beautiful wood that is used for many uses including instrumentation and fine furniture.Maples are a widely spread species around the world with many sub species of the main Acer species in almost all parts of the world with Canada and the US having great displays of colours in the autumn as they shed leaves for the winter.
The tree can be easily confused with Sycamore and the easy way of telling the difference between the species is the leaf stalk with the Maple having a green stalk and the Sycamore having a red stalk to the leaf.
Norway Maples have been used in Europe for centuries as a source of sugar with the trees being tapped for the highly sugary sap.
The Norway Maple can suffer from attacks from Squirrels with them stripping the bark to get at the sugary sap below, and they are fairly resistant to most diseases but regularly suffer from "tar spots" (Rhytisma acerinum) on their leaves which look unsightly but cause no lasting damage.
This cache is a re-invention of a nearby cache that suffered greatly from muggles, this is in a quieter area of the park and hopefully will remain
free from damage !!!
This is a small clip lock box in a different container from the norm, please replace as found. There is room in the box for small swaps and small trackables.
The box contains a First To Find disc from theoldspots to comemerate the first finding.
***Congratulations to Leonards193 for the First To Find***
