Geocache Description:

This is Great Trees 4 - Horse Chestnut.

There is a whole row of Horse Chestnuts here, this road was known as conker lane when I was a kid and was the source of all the conkers for use in the playground !

This is a continuation of a small series comemerating the great trees in the British Isles, the idea of the series is to give some information of the tree where the cache is hidden instead of the usual "base of tree" or "multi trunked tree" ! The trees can be anywhere and of any shape or size as long as they are celebrating the tree !!

The latin name for this tree is Aesculus hippocastanum and is a non-native tree to the United Kingdom and is thought to be introduced from the Balkans in the 16th century.

The leaves are very distinctive with five to seven large thick stalkless leaflets on each leaf. In the spring there are large large showy white spikes of flowers in abundance in the spring.

The conkers the tree produces in the autumn are eaten by deer and cattle and are used by kids to play an age old game in playgrounds !!

They are often to be found as ornamental trees in avenues and in parks, they are fairly quick growing and this can cause problems in later life as the limbs have no real strength and can be easily broken off by bad weather.  The wood from the tree has very little value as it is soft and so most of the wood is generally used for firewood.

This cache is a fairly easy find and can be done as a cache and dash from your car.  The container is a small clip lock container with room for swaps and small trackables and for the First To Find is a disc from theoldspots !!!

***Congratulations to Leonards193 for the First To Find***
