Geocache Description:

This is a 2-stage multi-cache located within Grand Valley Provincial Park

Grand Valley Provincial Park is located in the Assiniboine River valley and has a long and important history in the lives of First Nations peoples. This cache focuses on how the valley was used by early First Nations hunters to capture and kill bison, and how their hunting methods changed over the centuries.

When you arrive at the coordinates you will see 7 signs that tell the story of the buffalo hunt on the prairies. To find the final coordinates you must read the signs and do some math. At your final destination you are looking for… a bison... so BYOP.

Read the first sign, On the Trail of the Buffalo Chase, then look nearby for the next 6 signs.

A: Bison and the Land: Take the last 2 digits of the year Paul Kane wrote about the bison and add 1.

B: Lord of the Plains: How fast can a bison run? Subtract 4.

C: Lord of the Plains: How much heavier is a male bison than a female? Add 131.

D: Bison Hunting Before the Horse: If the hunters found a herd of 100 bison, how many would they kill?

E: Hunting With the Horse: What decade saw hunting on horseback replace the use of bison pounds? Take the last 2 digits and reverse them.

F: Commercial Exploitation of Bison: What is the difference in the years shown in Pressures of the Fur Trade? Add that to the difference in the years shown in Settlements, Trains and Sport. Next, add the last 2 digits of the year that tanners in Europe began using bison hides to make leather, then subtract 4.

The final coordinates are: N:A° B.C W:D° E.F

There are many other signs in this park that tell more of the story of our First Nations people - please explore the area and enjoy some of the history of our province. You may want to follow the trail up to the lookout - it's a bit of a hike but it is certainly worth the effort!
