This is a series of 3 caches featuring the Roadends community Sculpture Project in the year 2000 on South and North Uist which we have really enjoyed.
The cache and sculpture "Sanctuary" is in Clachan Bhiurabhal/Loch Euphort Road end on North Uist.
The description of the sculpture:
"Roadends aims to encourage communities to celebrate their identities, history and spirit by working with an artist to create an artwork set in the landscape.
Sanctuary by Roddy Mathieson. June 2000.
'Sanctuary' relates to elements within the landscape of Locheport. The bronze cast piece capture the flight of swans which regularly gather on the lochs nearby. The shape of boat ribs are also apparent. Patinated with sea water, the bronze form has talen on a rich turquoise green which sits dramatically in the landscape. Working alongside the artist, the local community assisted with site preparation and the collection of the stones required. From this point 'Sanctuary' marks the walking route to Burrival and Eaval.
