This outing offers an unusual view of the waterless southern basin of Cuyamaca Lake, n extensive grassland meadow, several forested areas, and backside views of Stonewall and Little Stonewall Peaks. Enjoy hiking a trail less travelled that offers what one needs to chase away the blues.
From north to south follow Marty Minshall Trail, Los Caballos Trail, and Los Vaqueros Trail. Expect well-worn footpaths with short and easy inclines. Note that the paved access road that leads from state Highway 79 to Los Vaqueros Horse Camp is closed except by reservation to accommodate group events. Note also that he road from Highway 79 into the horse camp is thoroughly posted with “No Parking” signs. Back country parking permit must be displayed in your vehicle when parked at the Trout Pond parking Area.
For a more ambitious hike with twenty more Geocaches to find do consider continuing south of the horse camp on Vern Whitaker Trail and then Stonewall Creek Fire Road to finish at the Cuyamaca Rancho Visitor Center. In this case a good strategy is to team up with one or more other another Geocacher so that one vehicle can be staged at the destination end of your hike to avoid a many-mile round trip.
