Most cachers enjoy launching, discovering, retrieving and moving Trackables; no cacher, however appreciates marking one of their TB’s, Geotags or Geocoins as missing…
Unfortunately, this happens more often than one would think! We love Trackables and of the 22 we have launched between October 2012 and July 2013, 6 went missing (of which we have relaunched 2) and another 2 have been stuck with non-responsive cachers!
So, here are our Top 10 Etiquette Rules for Trackables:
-
Log Trackable retrievals and drops promptly.
-
Have all Trackables in your possession gain mileage by visiting caches you find along the way.
-
If a Trackable is missing from a cache it is listed for, inform the owner by posting a note on that Trackable’s page and in your log for that cache.
-
Check a Trackable’s mission before placing it in another cache. The idea is to move it closer to its goal.
-
Be considerate and don't take a Trackable if you are not planning to go geocaching in the next 2-3 weeks. Their mission is to travel and not to remain stuck with an inactive cacher.
-
Do not leave Trackables in unsecure caches from where they can easily go missing.
-
Always save Trackables from remote caches not visited regularly; rather leave them in newer, often visited caches.
-
Never keep or sell a Trackable that is not yours.
-
Keep tabs on your owned caches; ensure Trackables move and if they go missing, peruse the logs, inform its owner and regularly purge your cache of all missing Trackables by marking them as MISSING.
-
And remember, Trackables remain the property of its owner; respect their ownership and promote their mission.
Our goal for this cache is to have it function like the old missing notices on milk cartons. Once you have found the cache, feel free to post pictures and tell the story of your missing Trackable children in your log.
Hopefully, this will create some awareness of basic Trackable Etiquette and serve as a reminder that each Trackable you discover, grab, move or keep has an owner who holds it dear.
