In 1951, the Lane Cove Valley Expressway was gazetted as part of the County of Cumberland Planning Scheme but it was never constructed.
The proposed route was to extend north from Fig Tree Bridge along the west side of the Lane Cove River, traversing Pittwater Road along today's East Ryde. It would continue to North Ryde, then proceed to West Pymble and on to Wahroonga where it would link with the Sydney-Newcastle Expressway near Pearces Corner. At its southern end the expressway would have been connected to the proposed North Western Expressway at Fig Tree Bridge to provide fast and convenient access from the city to the north western and northernmost suburbs of Sydney.
While some sections of the expressway were completed, major planning errors by Ryde Council were identified in a study of environmental impacts, undertaken by Macquarie University students in 1974. The Council had overlooked the impact in placing high-rise development in a gully alongside the proposed freeway alignment from Epping Road to the Pacific Highway. The reservation between Linley Point and Epping Road was de-gaztted in 1988, freeing 11 hectares of bushland areas across the Lane Cove River Valley, including the section of the Lane Cove River National Park in East Ryde.
At the end of Blenheim Road, near Epping Road, the Blenheim Park and the adjacent bushland were designated reservations for the expressway.
