You are looking for a small clip top box in a camo bag, placed in Harnser Wood, Elsing.
Harnser Wood is one of 250 woods planted in celebration of the Millennium as part of the “Woods on your Doorstep” project.
Harnser is the Norfolk word for a heron, and is even mentioned by Shakespeare, although the spelling is different:
“I am but mad north-north west: when the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.”
(Hamlet Act 2, Scene 2)
It could mean that when a hawk chases a “harnser,” the heron often flies with the wind to escape its predator. When the wind is from the south, the sun is at the hunter’s back so he can easily differentiate between his bird and his bird's prey. If the wind is from the north, the hunter would be looking into the sun and would find it harder to tell the birds apart.
There is a small parking area near one of the entrances to the wood – N52° 42.548 E001° 01.883. Other parking is available near the village sign, in the village or at the village hall.
The two caches in Harnser Wood can easily be combined with the Wensum Way Trail.
Cache placed with the permission of The Woodland Trust.
