Geocache Description:

Ironicons = Ironic Icons

The man in question married a woman who was fifteen years younger than him. They had a son named Jeremy and later a daughter named Jean. The wife died of a heart attack two years after their last child was born.

It was said that he was a person of the most upright character. High morals, brutally honest, a tireless crusader, and a pacifist without any racial or class prejudices. He tried to teach his children on the importance of being open-minded, judicious, generous neighbors and decent citizens. He was described as a tall, middle-aged man with glasses, and hair slightly graying at the temples.

In his most famous court case (during the Great Depression) he defended a man against unfounded charges. Despite strong evidence suggesting that the defendant was innocent, he lost the case. This was due in the most part to pressure from the people of his small southern hometown. He and his children faced physical violence and threats from fellow citizens during and after the trial. He refused to abandon the case, and urged his children to ignore the town's criticism. He continued to work for an acquittal, making the release of the innocent man a personal crusade.

ALMOST ENTIRELY UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT THIS PERSON:
This man went to Montgomery to study law and was later elected to the Alabama State Legislature. He was reelected without opposition many times. While a legislator, he met and married his wife. It was said that he was an expert marksman, but kept this hidden from his children so they would not think he was a violent man. The defendant in the trial was shot and killed while trying to escape from prison.
