Geocache Description:

St Giles Church Great Coxwell

A Church is thought to have existed on this site since just after the Norman conquest. Parts of the nave are almost two feet thick and may be Norman. Situated on a ridge it is one of the landmarks of the Vale of the White Horse. The church belonged to the Cistercians of Beaulieu Abbey from the early 13th century until the dissolution of the monasteries. The west tower was added in the 15th century and has a ring of five bells. Unfortunately the bells are currently unringable. The tower is decorated with strange figures such as a man being eaten by a monster, a lamb, a sow with suckling and the head of a king now much eroded. It also has a 14th century nail studded wooden door. At the eastern end of the nave roof is a rare surviving bellcote which housed a sanctus bell, used to let workers in the nearby fields know that at the alter the blessed sacrament was being elevated and calling them to pause and say a prayer.
The old churchyard is now managed as a wildlife area. It contains over 100 species of wildflower and at least 19 species of butterfly have been seen there.
