This is a cache in a lovely park only a few hundred meters from Wigan town centre.
The site of the rose garden originally contained tennis courts. During the Second World War, the parks superintendent began ploughing up the courts in preparation for growing vegetables and to set an example for the war effort "Dig for Victory".
The original rose garden was opened on the 3rd August 1949 as a memorial to Mr Alderman Francis James Pagett. Alderman Pagett had been keen to establish a rose garden in Mesnes Park. Interestingly the borough engineer at the time who was on the sub-committee was DM McKellen and 54 years later in 2003 his son, the actor Sir Ian McKellen who grew up across the road from Mesnes Park, opened the newly restored Rose Garden.
Even though this is a lovely quiet garden - it is a high muggle area - so the cache is a magnetic nano. NB As I am sure you know with a magnetic nano - byop, tweezers and care in picking and replacing needed.
