Pont y Ddraig is the name chosen for the iconic pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Clwyd estuary after a competition involving local primary schools. A good friend of mine was a very proud mum when her son Leon Jones was chosen as the winner of the competition.
The bridge is part of a £9.9million development which will include a public square and a quayside building to create a hub for the harbour, the surrounding dunes and beach areas.
The lightweight, 32 metre long bridge decks are made of glass fibre reinforced polymers and weigh around 8,000kg each.
A spokesman for Denbighshire Council said: "Once finished, the bridge will provide a scenic and traffic-free route for the coastal footpath between Rhyl and Kinmel Bay.
"The bridge decks will open against the central mast to allow boats through. "A striking lighting scheme will ensure the bridge is as much of a feature by night as it is by day."
The project is funded by Denbighshire Council, Sustrans, and the Welsh Government, including the European Regional Development Fund.
It also includes new quay walls with pontoon facilities and a full size slipway, together with a mooring pontoon in the channel for an additional ten boats.
It is expected these additions will provide improved facilities for boat users, such as a pick up point for charter fishing boats and tie-up facilities for visiting boats.
A visitor information office at the harbour can provide the latest updates on the project to harbour users, residents and visitors.
The cache is not located on the bridge itself but in a location where it's structure can be truly appreciated. Tweezers and a pen will be useful for this cache
