Geocache Description:

Built in 1835, Wylie House was the home of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie, and his family. Today, Wylie House is owned and operated by Indiana University as an historic house museum recreating the Wylie home prior to 1860.

The house is distinctive and unusual for Southern Indiana, a blend of Federal and Georgian styles of architecture more characteristic of southwest Pennsylvania, where Wylie was born and raised. It is one of the very few pre-1840 structures remaining in Bloomington.

The barn located behind the house is not original to the site. It serves as an event space/education center and offices for the museum staff. This barn is from elsewhere in Monroe County and dates to the 1860s. In 2009, this barn was dismantled board by board from its original location and then reassembled on the property of the Wylie House a few months later. When reconstructed, however, the builders used the wood from the original exterior siding of the barn to serve as the interior walls for the building, making the interior space quite amazing and authentically rustic.

This cache is placed with permission of Wylie House staff, so please tell them thank you if you see them.

I encourage you to go while the museum is open during the week for free guided tours, as many of the real treasures are inside, including impressive antiques and a stunning mural spanning the hallway of the first floor that depicts IU in its first years.

HOURS FOR GUIDED MUSEUM TOURS:
March through November
Tuesday through Saturday
10:00 am - 2:00 pm, or by special appointment
[Closed all major holidays, including Thanksgiving weekend]

Though this is technically available 24/7, I strongly recommend against going late at night as this is in the middle of a neighborhood. Please replace the container as found and make sure the lid is "threaded" correctly.

PARKING:
There are three gravel parking spaces to the north of the alley directly behind the museum. These are labeled “Reserved for Wylie House” and are intended for visitors. An additional paved parking area is located on the south side of the alley on the east side of the barn/education center(see waypoint). Parking on 2nd Street, directly in front of the museum, is also a fine option as it is either unrestricted or limited to 2 hours.
