Geocache Description:

Arrowe Country Park on Wirral cover in excess of 400 acres. It comprises approximately 250 acres of open parkland and woodland with the other 150 acres being used as a municipal 18 hole golf course.

HISTORY :

Liverpool shipowner and slave trader John Shaw bought Arrowe House Farm and the surrounding land in 1807. John Ralph Nicholson Shaw, his nephew, took ownership in 1829 on his uncles death. Arrowe Hall was built in 1835 and the grounds were landscaped to form a country estate, with parkland, a lake and workers' cottages.

The property was handed down to Captain Otho Shaw, a world traveller and collector, who housed numerous items there. Later in 1908, Arrowe Hall and Park were acquired by Lord Leverhulme, who subsequently sold the estate to Birkenhead Corporation in 1926.

In 1929, the 3rd World Scout Jamboree was held at Arrowe Park, with over 50,000 scouts and 320,000 visitors. There is a monument in the park which commemorates this event.

CURRENTLY :

The park woodland contains many Oak, Ash and Beech trees as well as conifers including Scots Pine and Cedar. There are also examples of Redwood, Cedar of Lebanon, Maidenhair and Indian Bean tree within the park. Birds frequiently seen include Rooks, Magpies, Jays, Nuthatches, Tree Creepers and Great and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Its also possible to see kingfishers as they fly along the park brook.

Within the park there are many leisure opportunities. As well as the 18 hole municipal golf course there is a pitch and putt course, tennis courts, bowling greens, football pitches and a children's play area. Of course there are also many opportunities for geocaching.

THE CACHE :

This geocache can be found close to the entrance to the park by the golf centre. It is a screw-top tube approximately 5 inches/12.5 cm long (see photo below). The difficulty rating reflects the cache is well hidden in trees which affect GPS accuracy. There is parking available at all times in the public car park by the golf centre, and refreshments are available nearby on most days.
