BWI has been in existence since June 1950. It was originally named Friendship International Airport because of the proximity of Friendship Church to the building site. In 2005, it officially became known as Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in recognition of the Supreme Court Justice.
BWI lies 10 miles south of Baltimore and 32 miles north of Washington DC and in 2012 served 22.68 million passengers. There are five concourses terminals (A, B, C, D & E) which house 84 gates.
On the four runways, 15 airlines fly their planes to numerous destinations throughout the world. BWI is currently the region’s busiest domestic airport.
