Vilanova i la Geltrú is a city in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and the capital of the Garraf comarca. Originally a fishing port, the city has a growing population of approximately 66,000, and is situated 40 km south-west of Barcelona, with the more famous coastal resort of Sitges some 10 km to the north-east.
The town has a long history, reaching its heyday during the Romantic period. Vilanova has a museum, founded by the Catalan poet, historian and diplomat, Víctor Balaguer (1824–1901), the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, which contains collections of Roman, Egyptian and prehistoric antiquities, as well as paintings, engravings, sculptures, coins and a large library. Vilanova also has a railway museum, the Museu del Ferrocarril de Vilanova i la Geltrú. Near the beach there is a miniature railway.
Apart from some renowned seafood restaurants, Vilanova is a recognised centre for xató, a winter salad dressed with a rich sauce made from almonds, olives, fish, oil and garlic, which forms the basis for the Festival of Xató (Xatonada) in tandem with nearby villages and towns. Other notable festivals include Festa Major in early August and Carnaval (late February) which includes Les Comparses, in which good-humoured rival groups throw boiled sweets (candies) at each other. However, the most important festival in Vilanova is the "Festival Internacional de Música Popular Tradicional", Vilanova International World Music Festival, which has been held since 1981 and is the oldest world music festival in Spain.

Originalmente un puerto pesquero, la ciudad tiene una población cada vez mayor de aproximadamente 66.000, y está situado a 40 km al sur-oeste de Barcelona, con la más famosa localidad costera de Sitges algunos a 10 km al noreste.
La ciudad tiene una larga historia, alcanzando su apogeo durante el período romántico. Vilanova cuenta con un museo, fundado por el poeta catalán, historiador y diplomático, Víctor Balaguer (1824 - 1901), la Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, que contiene colecciones de antigüedades romanas, egipcias y prehistóricas, así como pinturas, grabados, esculturas, monedas y una gran biblioteca. Vilanova también tiene un Museo del Ferrocarril, el Museo del Ferrocarril de Vilanova i la Geltrú. Cerca de la playa hay un tren en miniatura.
Aparte de algunos famosos restaurantes, Vilanova es un centro reconocido para xató, una ensalada de invierno vestido con una rica salsa de almendras, aceitunas, pescado, aceite y ajo, que constituye la base para el Festival del Xató (Xatonada) en conjunto con los pueblos y ciudades cercanas. Otras fiestas destacables son Festa Major a principios de agosto y Carnaval (finales de febrero), que incluye Les Comparsas, en el que los grupos rivales de buen humor tiran caramelos (dulces) el uno al otro. Sin embargo, la fiesta más importante de Vilanova es el "Festival Internacional de Música Popular Tradicional", Vilanova World Music Festival Internacional que se celebra desde 1981 y es el festival de músicas del mundo más antiguo de España.
